Jodie Paul June 24, 2024

Tucked away in the serene landscapes of Oneida County, Squirrel Lake stands as a beacon for those seeking solace in nature’s embrace. This lake of the month is not just a sight to behold but a hub for a myriad of recreational activities that cater to all ages and interests.

The lake’s mostly clear waters beckon visitors to dive into a world of aquatic adventures. Whether you’re gliding across the surface in a kayak or paddleboard, or exploring with onboard your fishing vessel, Squirrel Lake is an aquatic playground waiting to be enjoyed. Encircling the lake, a network of logging trails offers an invitation to hikers. These paths wind through lush forests and open up to scenic vistas, providing a perfect backdrop for those seeking a physical challenge or a peaceful stroll.

When the landscape is transformed into a winter wonderland, Squirrel Lake becomes a destination for ice and snow enthusiasts: including snowshoeing and ice fishing. The lake continues to thrive as a center for winter sports.

Not only notable for recreation, but Squirrel Lake is also a haven for musky fishing, where the thrill of the catch is matched only by the beauty of the surroundings. The lake’s environment supports a healthy population of musky, making it an ideal spot for both novice and experienced anglers. The fall season, in particular, is a prime time for musky fishing as the cooler water temperatures encourage these majestic fish to be more active.

The lake itself is made up of a mostly sandy bottom and is supplied by both streams and springs keeping the water cool and clear.  It’s overall 1309 acres give anglers plenty of room to spread out to find their targets.  Not only are muskies present, but also bass and pike for those who are interested in targeting other species.

Musky anglers tend to focus on areas with abundant aquatic vegetation and drop-offs at the Northern end of the lake, utilizing a variety of lures such as jerkbaits and soft plastics, and remember that patience and persistence are key in musky fishing.  As is common with clear lakes, it’s always best to start with natural bait color selections, black or white, to narrow down your scope.  This lake really has it all when it comes to depth changes, vegetation, sandy outcroppings, and reefs, so make a mental note of the lake as a whole before leaving the dock.

At the Northern end of Squirrel Lake, you’ll find a nice tidy boat ramp with good parking where you can launch so you can enjoy all of the musky fishing on the side of the lake that counts.  If you are a kayaker, be sure to paddle over to the tiny Inkpot Lake to explore the tannin-stained waters, lily pads, logs, and reeds, as well as, the painted turtles, herons, frogs, and muskrats that call this ecosystem home.  It’s a more down-to-nature experience for sure.

Venture to this hidden gem in Wisconsin, and discover the myriad of pleasures it holds. Whether you’re casting a line or capturing the beauty of the landscape, Squirrel Lake promises an adventure that resonates with the heart of every outdoor enthusiast.
