Musky Shop Northwoods Fishing Report: Late October 2024
Hello Everyone,
Fishing in the Northwoods of Wisconsin has been very good and we hope you are getting some time to get out fishing and enjoy God's creation. Fall fishing is my favorite time of year to fish and I'm sure many of you would say the same. To me some of the best pics we receive are of someone holding a nice Musky with fall colors popping in the background, those pics are for sure my favorite.
With that being said, Musky fishing has been good. Their current location I would say is somewhat scattered. There are some shallow, and some out off of the weed and structural edges but it seems like the majority of them are right near the structural edge. They will move throughout the day and typically slide up on to the edge overnight and then set out a bit during the daylight period but this is not a 100% thing but typically those movements are pretty accurate. Sometimes I might sound like a broken record as I speak of structural edges but after turnover in which most lakes in Oneida and Vilas county have turned over Muskies will move along and near the structural edge.
In my opinion a good plan is to set your boat out off of the edge and then cast up on the edge so that you are covering up on the edge, the edge and out off the edge. This system has worked well for me over the years but always pay attention to what is happening around you. If you are getting some follows try to see what depth they are coming from and note the wind, weather, sky conditions, and moon. If one will engage a little thought to what is happening around you then use those factors to your advantage it will definitely aid in your fishing success.
For baits, really a wide variety of baits will work but try to gage the baits you select to where Muskies are positioning. Shallow and deep cranks are great, like Big Fork Avitars and Boss Shads, spinnerbaits and bucktails work well, like those from Ruff Tackle and RJ’s Lures, of course soft plastics and jerkbaits, from Toothy Tuff and Alpha Dawgs to Red October Tubes. Surface baits shouldn't be ruled out altogether however unless you are seeing Muskies quite shallow, you will want to consider other baits, though you could give weighted Suicks a try. If you are using Live Musky Suckers which is a good thing to do try to keep your Musky Sucker out of cover so it's not getting tangled in weeds and such as that will simply slow you down and make you less efficient. We have a great selection of fresh wild caught Musky Suckers and Muskies have been hitting them very well.
As for other species such as Walleye's Bass and Panfish, they all have been biting well. On the deep clear lakes Walleyes are near the edges too and also hanging around deep structure and out in the main lake basins. Panfish, Crappies and Bass can be found in the weeds and wood in the 5–12-foot range. Nightcrawlers are still working but the Minnow bite is more productive. We have a very good selection of fresh live Minnows including Redtails.
We hope you get a chance to get out this fall and do some fishing, please let us know if we can be of service to you as it would be our pleasure and visit Musky Shop Guide Service to get on the books with one of our experienced guides.
