Musky Shop Northwoods Fishing Report: Late March 2025

James Stewart March 28, 2025

Greetings Everyone,

We hope you’re enjoying great fishing weather, whether it’s late ice fishing or open water fishing in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Fishing conditions here have been excellent, though we’re nearing the end of the ice fishing season. Read on for the latest updates on ice conditions, crappie fishing, walleye hotspots, and upcoming events!

Late Ice Fishing Update: Minocqua Area Lakes

In the Minocqua area, lakes still hold approximately 12 inches of ice as of this week. However, lake edges can be suspect depending on the day, so please use extreme caution when heading out for late ice fishing. Safety is key this time of year!

Crappie Fishing Hotspots and Tips

For those who love late ice fishing, crappie fishing has been strong. Anglers are catching good numbers of crappies in deep weeds at depths of 18-20 feet. Top baits include:

  • Soft plastics
  • Crappie minnows
  • XL Fatheads
  • Wax worms
  • Red-white spikes

These are all performing well. On the Rainbow Flowage and Willow Flowage, focus on the river channels for the best crappie and panfish action. Both tip-downs and jigging are excellent techniques to target crappies and panfish during late ice conditions.

Open Water Walleye Fishing: Tomahawk, WI

For open water anglers, the river near Tomahawk, WI, has been a hot spot for walleye fishing. Jigging with XL Fatheads is the top method, yielding good numbers and a few big walleyes mixed in. It’s a great time to hit the water before the official season kicks off!
