Musky Shop Northwoods Fishing Report: Late March 2024

Greetings from Minocqua WI,

We have open water on most of the lakes in Oneida and Vilas county which should be close to a record for ice out. The small lakes skim over some nights when the temps drop to single digits but for the most part, we should be good to go for open water. The gamefish season is closed on inland lakes; however, one can fish for walleye on the Tomahawk River. One of our guide staff members Al “Frosty” Frost has been out there quite a bit so far and has had pretty good success catching numbers and decent-sized walleye too. Al has been using jigs tipped with XL Fatheads.

As for the lakes in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, crappie, perch, and panfish have been scattered a bit. You will want to try and find the warmest water on the lake and most likely the most Northern areas of the lake as they warm faster. You may need to search a bit for them as I mentioned they are scattered and not a lot of them are shallow yet but jigs, tipped with a crappie minnow, or on a warmer sunny day, a jig tipped with a worm will work to catch some early season fish.
