Musky Shop Northwoods Fishing Report: Early September 2024

Fred Palermo September 06, 2024

Fishing the Northwoods is about to take a turn for everyone's favorite time as we slow-roll into fall.  Though we’ve faced a bit of blustery wind lately, the temperatures remain solid with the low 70s being the high.  Locals are reporting good numbers though finding the fish has sometimes been tricky as they are staging in all depths as the temperatures are fairly consistent across the lake.

To find the muskies, our guides recommend you take a good look at shallow and deep water.  The morning water temps are in the upper 60s, sending muskies somewhat shallow.  As the day progresses, the water temperature climbs into the low 70s and muskies travel deeper on reefs and deep structure to stage.  We are far away from lake turnover so the bite is still consistent and easy to follow throughout the day.  Muskies have been hitting soaking suckers, but if you prefer casting, the Big Makk has been delivering on topwater in low light conditions and the Shallow Swimmin’ Dawg has been a hit throughout the day.

The walleye bite has also been scattered and really depends on which waterway you fish.  Lakes are delivering up good numbers of walleye in the 25-30 ft depths, and other walleye have been caught holding to the outside weed edge.  Anglers are having success catching good-sized fish with crawlers and red tails.

If you’re searching for a good panfish bite, crappies can be found suspended or buried in the weeds. As the water warms throughout the day, you can usually find the crappies slowly moving shallow.  Right now, anglers are reporting great success using crappie scrubs, fathead minnows, and Bobby Garland Slab Slayers.  If you're heading out to fish in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, stop by and see us at the Musky Shop.  It’s our privilege to serve you.
