Musky Shop Northwoods Fishing Report: Early October 2024
Hello from the Musky Shop!
We hope you all are having a great fall. For many, fall is their favorite time of year to fish, and that would include most of us here at the Musky Shop. We hope you get a chance to do some fishing this fall and even better we hope you can join us here in the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin to chase some Muskies and the many other species our area lakes have to offer. Pretty much everything has been biting well. We have had pretty stable weather, a bit warm at times, but with the cool nights, it has led to very good fishing.
For muskies, you will want to concentrate on shallow locations as they have for the most part been basically from the shoreline out to the initial weed edge. Now there have been plenty of muskies being caught near the weed edge too but a good plan of attack would be to position your boat out off of the weed edge a bit then cast inward so that you cover shallow structure and as you retrieve your lure you can cover the edge as well. Muskies will roam around and if you work weeds, rocks, and wood where you can cover the shallow portion of it, as well as, covering the edge of the structure, you will up your odds of being successful.
The water temps in Vilas and Oneida counties are currently in the upper 50s. To my knowledge lakes start the turnover process in the mid-50-degree range. Now I'm far from an expert in terms of when lakes turnover but to my knowledge and experience usually the mid 50's is when they seem to start to flip. If you are fishing and that happens, don't panic, you can still catch fish. Smaller lakes flip faster than larger lakes so maybe a good plan would be to take a peek at a small lake of your choice and maybe a larger lake of your choice and fish the lake that is the cleanest. Again, one can still catch fish during turnover but be prepared to lake-hop a bit. That is another great thing about the Northwoods as we have a ton of lakes to pick from. One can always find a place to fish if we are having a windy fall day as well, there are just so many options. To me, that is one of the reasons Northern Wisconsin is one of the best places in the world to go fishing.
Muskies have been hitting a variety of artificial baits and hitting Musky Suckers as well. Some recommended favorites currently are the Savage Gear Burbot Tube and Savage Gear Crosstail Sucker. These new lures are seeing great success in these colder temperatures. And for your suckers, there are plenty of variations of sucker rigs to choose from at the shop as well. We have a great supply of fresh Musky Suckers that we keep in Cold running well water.
Walleye, bass, and panfish have all been pretty shallow as well but there too, they will roam around a bit so try shallow structure and if no luck slide out a bit deeper. For live bait, Redtail chubs, Walleye Suckers, Fatheads, and Crappie minnows have all been working as well as nightcrawlers as well. Well gotta run, but if you need anything please stop by or contact us at the Musky Shop as it would be our honor to serve you.
Good Fishing and God Bless, Jim Stewart
