Musky Shop Northwoods Fishing Report: Early August 2024

Musky Shop Northwoods Fishing Report: Early August 2024

James Stewart August 09, 2024

We hope everyone is having a great summer fishing season. Fishing in the Northwoods of Wisconsin has been enjoyable. Fishing for Walleye, panfish, largemouth, and smallmouth bass have all seen good results. We have had a pretty nice summer in terms of weather, plus a good amount of rain thus the water levels are normal or a bit high.

On the deep clear lakes in Oneida and Vilas County, Walleye are a bit deeper in the 25-foot range. Rock piles and mid-lake humps have been holding a good number of Walleye. Nightcrawlers, Leeches, Redtail chubs, and XL Fatheads are all catching fish as well as soft plastics such as the Keitech Swing Impact. Panfish and bass are scattered with good numbers in the weeds and weed edges. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and a variety of live bait are all producing good numbers.

Musky fishing has been a bit up and down in the last week or so. The Musky season in Oneida and Vilas county I would say has been pretty stable, just the last week or so has been a bit up and down. We are in a pretty strong cold front with the extended weather forecast looking like it will be a bit cooler than normal. Muskies are still scattered and seem to have slid shallow a bit and more numbers of Muskies are holding tight to cover and near the weed edge. There are still Muskies suspended out in the main lake basins following baitfish however the majority of them are shallow and near the weed edge.

In conversing with our guide staff and customers coming in and out of the Musky Shop a variety of baits have been seeing action. We are hearing surface, glide baits, twitching crankbaits, bucktails, and soft plastics are all producing Muskies. With the weather being cooler the proper approach should be to slow down in your presentations and kind of root them out so to speak. Now as we know Muskies like to change their mind quickly sometimes so be prepared and open minded to adjust on the fly. Some good baits to consider would be 6" Phantom Softtails, Krakens, 5" Toothy Tuff Assault Eels, Whopper Plopper 190s, Titans, Smity Twitchin Smity.

We have Musky Suckers in stock as well as fresh live bait and thousands of lures here at the Musky Shop. Please let us know if we can be of service to you as it would be our pleasure.

Good Fishing and God Bless, Jim Stewart
