Musky Shop Northwoods Lake of the Month: Lake Laura
As we march through March, biting our nails for musky season, let me introduce Lake Laura, another pristine scenic beauty nestled deep in Vilas County. Lake Laura is not the typical fair when it comes to the Northwoods' most sought-after musky lakes, but it is something to be appreciated and fished when you're looking for a relaxed getaway. So please don’t pack up your 40-foot speed boat for this adventure, it’s more suitable for you, your boat partner, and the standard-sized lake vessel.
Lake Laura is an easily navigable 628-acre lake with a mostly sandy bottom. There isn’t much to confuse about this lake, as it’s very much bowl-shaped and has not much to hide. It has a maximum depth in the center of the lake of 43 feet which also doesn’t leave much to the imagination. With a bit of navigation equipment, finding the depth changes and drops is as simple as it gets, so depending on the month, you’ll mostly be concentrating on finding the best depth for muskies.
As far as lure choice, Lake Laura features good edge weeds for your TopRaiders and Bucktails, but as you make your way out to deeper drops, get the most out of your day by trolling the 12 ft edge with a Jake or Grandma, sure to entice the most finicky musky. Lake Laura features pretty good clarity so choose natural colors to tempt a follow, perch pattern comes recommended by locals.
Outside of the fishing, the area surrounding Lake Laura is exploding with nature. Hiking Trails and Wilderness areas surround the lake for a little “get-a-way” experience. This is not a bustling area if you are planning a Northwoods exciting adventure. I would highly recommend picking up anything you need on the way because Lake Laura is a hidden, tranquil gem for those needing to avoid the trappings of the modern world. Its shores are far less dotted with housing than many of the Northwoods lakes, and if you keep watch, you are sure to spot eagles, loons, and other lovely wildlife.
So, if you are making your way to the Northwoods this spring, whether to take in the scenic beauty or to catch your favorite trophy fish, give Lake Laura a look, nestled in Vilas County. Lake Laura may not be the most crowded or well-known lake, but its unspoiled beauty and fishing potential make it a cherished spot for those in the know.
